baby carrying gear

I am thrilled with my new baby carrier- it’s an Ergo, which is designed to carry the baby on your front, back, or hip.  Noah is still a little small to do the back carry, and the side one involves complicated strap movements that I haven’t figured out yet, but we both love the front one.  I can truly have both hands free, and he gets to be nice and snuggled and safe, but can also look around.  He’s been riding around to wind down before naps, and it works great- we usually water the plants, hang up laundry, put stuff away, or deadhead the azaleas until he gets drowsy.  We’re kind of regretting not getting this earlier- he could have gone in it at 4 months or even younger, because he’s so strong, and there is even an infant insert you can buy for younger babies.

So, now we have a total of 7 baby carrying devices, all of which have their own use.  Babies come with so much gear!  I have a flat cloth sling, which was great when Noah was too little for the ergo, but it’s been starting to hurt my back a bit as he got heavier.  We also had a sling for Dave, because my sling was sized for me.  We have a hiking baby backpack that is nice because it has an airspace between your back and the baby, so it’s best for hot days.  I’ve used it to take Noah into Media when I forgot the collapsible stroller in the car, but it’s not so comfortable to also carry groceries while wearing it.  We have a jogging stroller (which Noah will fit until he’s out of strollers) and a collapsible stroller for going on planes or public transit.  And the car seat.  And we’re still watching craigslist for a bicycle trailer, which will make 8 ways to move the baby from A to B…

I hate accumulating stuff, but I’m also glad we have each of these things.

The nicest bicycle trailer I’ve seen was a Trans Canada Trail one I came across a couple years ago. I went looking for one for you at the time, but I guess they don’t sell them anymore. (The one I saw was attached to someone’s bike, and I accosted them on the street to inspect it). This was all well before Noah’s time, so I probably won’t be able to find one now… it would be something to keep an eye out for, though.
