house rules

I’ve had to make some custom rules for our family as things come up, which I’m sure happens to everybody.  For instance, we’ve had a rule for years that nobody is allowed to wear, or even try on, crampons in rooms with hardwood floors.

Noah is of course needing lots of new rules, and the biggest one is that he has to listen to “Mommy says no”.  He definitely understands when he’s being naughty now- if he’s quietly doing something that isn’t allowed, he really jumps when he sees me coming.  And if he’s stealing books (the rule he breaks most often) he will sometimes take the book and run for it.  But usually if I catch him about to do something, and tell him no, he backs off pretty well- he really is a good boy.  A big part is removing temptation- if he finds the netbook on the floor, there’s guaranteed to be a tantrum when I take it away, but that’s more my fault than his.

Anyway, I had to make another house rule on Friday night: No tap dancing in the bathtub.  I know some of my friends don’t even let their babies stand up in the tub, but I draw the line at tap dancing.  He’s been doing this adorable stamping dance all week, and we’re trying to get a video of it, so he should be on youtube soon, but it was only on Friday morning that Dave figured out that he’s been trying to tap dance.  He learned it from Elmo!  There’s a section on one of his videos where two kids go to a tap dancing class and learn a new dance step, and they try and try until they get it, and he’s picked it up just from watching tv.  Oh, tv.  Anyway, he’s been doing his new dance like crazy now, and he even will stop on the landing when he’s going up or down the stairs to tap dance to the next flight, so we’ve had to say no dancing in the tub or on the stairs.

Hee – I love it! I will now be looking for second hand Fred Astaire dvds for him instead of second hand Elmo dvds. Fred will show him the ins and outs of tap dancing on stairs!

Noah needs to get the “Elmo’s Potty Time” DVD so he can learn something useful from TV. His tap dancing career really can’t take off with a diaper holding him back…
